The institute conducts world-level basic and applied research for information and communication technology. Its research ranges from fundamental methods and technologies to novel applications and their impact on people and society.

HIIT is a joint research institute of Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. HIIT Director Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the HIIT director include the following:

Developing and delivering the institute strategy
Taking responsibility for HIIT’s budget and finances as well as preparing and proposing issues for the HIIT Board
Heading the staff of HIIT and leading the recruitment of new staff
Interacting with funding agencies, institutions and corporations
Strengthening the institute’s relationships with partners and other stakeholders globally as well as in Finland
Exploiting the research excellence of HIIT's parent universities, in co-operation with them
Carrying out scientific research in a core area of HIIT and teach at the doctoral level

The director works in close co-operation with HIIT’s Board of Directors, the strategic decision-making body of the institute.

Duration
Both Aalto University and the University of Helsinki shall employ the director for a period of up to 5 years at a time beginning August 1, 2015. The appointment is renewable.

Tactile Glove Provides Subtle Guidance to Objects in Vicinity

Researchers at HIIT and Max Planck Institute for Informatics show how computer vision -based hand tracking and vibration feedback on the user’s hand can be used to steer the user’s hand toward an object of interest. A study shows an almost three-fold advantage in finding objects from complex visual scenes, such as library or supermarket shelves.

Finding an object from a complex real-world scene is a common yet time-consuming and frustrating chore. What makes this task complex is that humans’ pattern recognition capability reduces to a serial one-by-one search when the items resemble each other.

Researchers from the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics have developed a prototype of a glove that uses vibration feedback on the hand to guide the user’s hand towards a predetermined target in 3D space. The glove could help users in daily visual search tasks in supermarkets, parking lots, warehouses, libraries etc.

The main researcher, Ville Lehtinen of HIIT, explains "the advantage of steering a hand with tactile cues is that the user can easily interpret them in relation to the current field of view where the visual search is operating. This provides a very intuitive experience, like the hand being 'pulled' toward the target."

The solution builds on inexpensive off-the-shelf components such as four vibrotactile actuators on a simple glove and a Microsoft Kinect sensor for tracking the user’s hand. The researchers published a dynamic guidance algorithm that calculates effective actuation patterns based on distance and direction to the target.

In a controlled experiment, the complexity of the visual search task was increased by adding distractors to a scene. "In search tasks where there were hundreds of candidates but only one correct target, users wearing the glove were consistently faster, with up to three times faster performance than without the glove", says Dr. Antti Oulasvirta from Max Planck Institute for Informatics.

Dr. Petteri Nurmi from HIIT adds: "This level of improvement in search performance justifies several practical applications. For instance, warehouse workers could have gloves that guide them to target shelfs, or a pedestrian could navigate using this glove. With the relatively inexpensive components and the dynamic guidance algorithm, others can easily build their own personal guidance systems.”

The research paper will be presented at the 25th ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology UIST'12 in Boston, MA, USA on 7–10 October, 2012.

Future Networks, Society and Modeling (FuNeSoMo) project is announcing an open call for applications for funding for research visits between Finland and US. This call is directed primarily to cover research exchange between Aalto University and the International Computer Science Institute ICSI Berkeley and/or University of California, Berkeley (UCB).

The call is intended to support research visits of 3-11. For senior applicants, also shorter research visits can be funded (minimum 2 weeks) but visit duration cannot exceed 6 months. The research visits cannot extend beyond December 2013.

The application consists of the following documents:

A list of possible hosts within ICSI and/or UCB. An already established contact is not required in order to suggest a host. Suggested hosts will be contacted in collaboration with ICSI and UCB. If established contact exists, a recommendation letter from the suggested host can be added to the application, but is not obligatory.
A high-quality research plan in the area of FuNeSoMo with tentative schedule and budget covering all expected costs (salary, housing, travel) demonstrating tight connection with FuNeSoMo thematic research areas and an outline of planned collaboration with the possible host.
CV including publication list

A successful candidate will have a good track record of high-quality research in the area of FuNeSoMo (depending on the career phase). The junior applicants must have at least a master's level degree and be enrolled as a graduate student in either Aalto University or University of Helsinki to be eligible to apply for funding from FuNeSoMo.

FuNeSoMo funding will cover the salary, daily allowance and travel expenses and a fixed sum for housing expenses during the research visits for the successful candidates. The salary is based on HIIT salary policy. Applicants from companies should get in touch with the coordinator to inquire how to apply for funding from FuNeSoMo for a research exchange to ICSI.

The FuNeSoMo steering group will choose the best applications for funding. The funding decisions will be announced end of May directly to all applicants.

FuNeSoMo has 2-3 calls annually. The next call deadline is planned for September 2012.

Future Networks, Society and Modeling - FuNeSoMo is a Tekes-funded 3-year research exchange project 1.1.2011-31.12.2013 built on the existing collaboration between HIIT and Tekes in Finland and ICSI Berkeley in the USA. A large part of the collaboration is also taking place between HIIT and University of California at Berkeley (UCB).

The mission of the project is twofold. FuNeSoMo 1) provides a framework for research exchange between Finland and ICSI and UCB, with particular focus on continuing the current collaboration, and 2) funds research exchange between Finland and ICSI and UCB on selected thematic research areas as described in the project plan.

The goal of FuNeSoMo is to enable fundamental research in the thematic areas, aiming at significant contributions towards the future development of these areas. FuNeSoMo also aims to further strengthen the international visibility and dissemination of the Finnish research both in the US and the global scientific community.

FuNeSoMo thematic research areas

The initial main research thematic areas of the project are

1. Future Networks
2. Users in the network society
3. Computational modeling and data analysis

Future Networks
Efforts on building the Future Internet have received a lot of attention and funding recently. Networking has been a traditional strong field of research both at HIIT and at ICSI and the current FICNIA project is directly aimed at networking research. FuNeSoMo will continue along this track along the research projects defined below. Important topics that will be covered in FuNeSoMo include traffic analysis, accountability, data center networks, information-centric networking, services, and software-defined networking. A new, emerging field of research, green IT, is also a topic researched both at UCB and HIIT and this is likely to yield future collaboration potential as well.

Users in the network society
During the past ten years HIIT has had strong collaboration with universities in the USA in the areas of 1) mobile user experience and human-computer interaction, 2) user-centric research on design and use of digital services, and 3) legal, business and social constructs that support the development of future network society. The first track concentrates on design of novel interfaces and experiences in ubiquitous and mobile computing, coupling in-depth user studies with design in the area of novel interfaces. The goal of this work is to contribute to technology development efforts by deepening understanding of human perspectives. The second track aims at developing new concepts, new paradigms, new theories, and new innovations based on empirical and experimental data gathered from real-life use. The third track concentrates on legal frameworks of privacy and IPR, word-of-mouth marketing mechanisms in online services, and virtual consumption of digital goods. Also, combining research efforts with computation modeling (see below) is one more promising direction for research in this area.

Computational modeling and data analysis
Within the fields of computational data analysis and machine learning there are excellent collaboration opportunities. There are two relevant Centers of Excellence affiliated with Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and many other groups in Helsinki and Finland, several top-level groups in ICSI, Berkeley, Stanford and MIT. Computational modeling-powered interaction and interface techniques are a field rapidly rising in importance. There are strong Finnish groups in HIIT working on machine learning and interface aspects (speech, image analysis, proactive interfaces, interaction within HIIT and ICSI (speech, vision, natural language processing). Another very promising direction of collaboration is computational methods in genomics between ICSI and HIIT.

FuNeSoMo funding - how to apply

FuNeSoMo will arrange 2-3 open calls annually to apply funding for research visits of 3-11 months between Finland and US . For senior applicants, also shorter research visits can be funded (minimum 2 weeks). FuNeSoMo will only fund research in the thematic areas listed above. The separate calls can be directed to one, two or all thematic areas at a time.

My background is in Clinical Psychology and I recently graduated from a joint Professional Master's program in Human-Computer Interaction by Carnegie Mellon University (U.S.A.) and University of Madeira (Portugal).

Understanding and improving the relationship between people and technology, user behavior and social networking, interaction design, field research.

Current Activities

As part of my work in USec I'm currently conducting user studies on the topic of online trust, privacy and security. The final aim of the project will be to create a more usable security allowing users to naturally and effortlessly employ it during their daily online transactions.

Recent Work

As part of my Master's capstone project I worked in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of 5 members. Having to design a banking solution for Microfinance Institutions in Mozambique, I spent some time in the field gathering data and validating design concepts later.

Part of this work was described on a paper - Aiming for Mobile Banking in Mozambique: A Case of Field Research for Interaction Design.

Usable Security, Privacy and Trust (USec)

The group's work is based on a human-centred perspective on security, trust and privacy in the Internet. In usable security, users can understand the security and are able to have an active part in controlling their security and privacy online. Trust emerges from this ability and forms the basis for succesful interactions in online activities. This ability is heavily influenced by the difference between a poor user interface and a good one.

This group was active 2009-2012 but is no longer in existence. The group was part of the Future Internet research programme.

Advanced Virtual Economy Applications AVEA

Advanced Virtual Economy Applications (AVEA) is a research project focusing on new approaches to so-called “virtual property”, artificially scarce digital objects that have rapidly become a viable business model for software products and online services, and especially gained prominence in e.g. massively multiplayer online games. We combine theoretical understanding of virtual economies with new application areas to produce novel software concepts aimed at the global market: mobile virtual economies, casual gaming, social networks, sustainable consumer behavior, and analytical software.

The project implements selected virtual economy applications as software prototypes allowing for realistic evaluation and paving way for possible commercialisation. The work is conducted at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology in collaboration with Waseda University, Tokyo, and industry partners. The project lasts for 2,5 years and the budget is 671 000 €.
