Spectral Mass

Spectral Mass is an EEGLAB Extension (formerly called plugin) used to compute the probability that two EEG datasets are similar in terms of both power (ERSP in EEGLAB terms) and coherence (ITC). It is open source (GPL), hence comments and additions to the code are welcome. The details of this method are discussed in an upcoming paper.

	Download Version 0.1

This is the first release of the extension and has been used to test the effectiveness of the extension. This release has been tested only on one dataset and might contain various bugs. As will be discussed in the article, this extension calculates a single p-value, representing the combined probability of a difference in EEG activity between two conditions.

	Development Versions

If you want to contribute or have access to the latest code you can visit our github repository: https://github.com/HIIT/spectralmass

	Installing the plugin

The plugin can be installed by uncompressing its zip file in your eeglab13_x/plugins folder. A spectralmass0.1 folder should be created within, containing all extension files.

	Step-by-step guide

Using the command "which eeglab" should show the folder in which eeglab is currently installed:

>> which eeglab
/Users/marco/Documents/MATLAB/eeglab13_2_2b/eeglab.m

This means that the plugins folder is located, in my case, it the "eeglab13_2_2b" folder. The zip file should then be uncompressed in:

/Users/marco/Documents/MATLAB/eeglab13_2_2b/plugins/

This is enough to allow eeglab to load the plugin on startup. The correct behaviour can be verified by looking the eeglab output on launch:

>> eeglab
[...] (other plugins being loaded)
EEGLAB: adding "spectralmass" v0.1 (see >> help eegplugin_spectralmass)

This indicates that the plugin was loaded correctly and is ready for use.

	Using the plugin

This version of the extension requires two datasets to be loaded in memory. This can be done by loading existing eeglab datasets as follows:

It is also possible to load datasets in other formats. Spectral Mass requires our datasets to be already event-locked (number of epochs > 1) and already loaded in memory (they appear in the datasets menu). Instructions on how to segment data are provided in the EEGLAB tutorial.

The Spectral Mass plugin can be now started from the "Tools" menu.

This will load the main window. The settings depend on the lenght of your time locking window (this window size was chosen to match the event-locking in Countering Countermeasures: Detecting Identity Lies by Detecting Conscious Breakthrough). The upper and lower frequencies can also be adjusted, depending on your experimental setup (these settings were used to analyse RSVP data presented at a 100ms SOA, hence our upper frequency bound stops at 8 Hz).

Pressing "ok" will start the procedure. This will load show the time-frequency difference between the two conditions and start the randomisation process. This might take long, depending on the number of randomisation samples you chose in the previous step.

After the procedure is complete, you should see the calculated p-value in Matlab's output:

Spectral Mass p-value (difference between LIEN2F-S1_Probe-Long.set and LIEN2F-S1_Catch1-Long.set): 0.598
>>

In this case, no significant difference was found between the two datasets.

The Functional Area of the Thumb on Mobile Touchscreens

Where the thumb can reach on a touchscreen surface? The benefit of this model is that you can estimate the thumb functional area quickly and without extensive user experiments.

The model predicts the functional area of the thumb on mobile touchscreens, and can inform

Designers of where to place the input elements

Evaluators of the grips that cover given screen positions

Adaptive interfaces of the thumb reach given current grip

The model takes 1) user hand size, 2) grip, and 3) device size as an input. Given statistics or other reference, or even an intuition as to these, the model provides the functional area of the thumb.

The paper to appear in CHI 2014, Toronto

http://www.hiit.fi/u/jebergst/CHI2014_Thumb_functional_area.pdf

Bergstrom-Lehtovirta, J., and Oulasvirta, A. Modeling the functional area of the thumb on mobile touchscreen surfaces. To appear in CHI '14, ACM (2014).

		Background

A challenge unique to interaction with mobile touchscreens is that not all of the surface can be reached with the thumb of the hand that holds the device. If an interaction element is beyond the thumb’s immediate reach, the user must change grip in order to reach it. Frequent grip changes can be detrimental to mobile interaction, wherein users must also devote attention to their surroundings. We believe that reaching the interactive elements is important in any one-hand use, because the costs of changing the grip can be surprisingly high, particularly when the other hand would need to be recruited for the task when it is not available. Our model can aid in designing reachable interfaces within the functional area of the thumb.

			Procedure and Calculation

The models takes information about the user’s hand size, grip, and device size. You can consult statistics or otherwise estimate the input parameters.

Overview or the protocol:

Obtain or estimate the finger span 's' (the distance between the extended index finger tip and thumb tip) of the target user group by measurement or by consulting anthropometric tables. In the paper the average female finger span was 184.25mm.

Obtain information about the grip, via estimation, direct measurement, or consulting of statistics:

Obtain the origin of the grip. This indicates the hand position on the side of the device (the red circle in the Figure above is placed 50mm from the bottom side of the device)

Obtain or estimate the hand orientation against the side of the device (α in the Figure above).

Measure or estimate the position of the extended index finger's tip on the back of the device (d in the Figure above is 80mm).

Insert parameters in the model (Equation below), rotate according hand orientation (blue line in the Figure above illustrates α = 90◦ and red line α = 110◦), and plot the model output appropriately for the device (Lumia 900 in the example Figure above).

The model for evaluating the functional area of the thumb:

fy(x) = ay(x+h)2 +s−d(1+ak)−bk

(Note: The input parameters to this equation are s and d. You can use α and device dimensions to plot the output in relation to the device. The coefficients ay, h, ak, and bk are provided in the paper and implemented to the tool below, but you can modify those if you have collected user data.)

We also provide a simple Matlab tool for plotting the functional area of the thumb:

Download Plot_Functioanl_Area.m and run in Matlab

Obtain and insert the abovementioned parameters of the user hand size, grip, and device

Click “calculate” to get the prediction given your input

Please note that the plotting tool doens't scale the size of the figure that it plots, so please see the axis to refer to the dimensions of your device. The tool still misses calculation of the grip coverage (see the paper), but we're working on it!

	Goals and Activities

My long term goal is to create digital 3D worlds with one-to-one mapping with the real world and provide advanced mobile interfaces to them. I have implemented this research with a series of projects from 2001 onward, having the first OpenGL ES based mobile 3D map already in 2003 and the first realistically textured 3D city map in 2004 running on mobile devices.

I'm currently the coordinator of the EU project CultAR and partnering in another EU funded projcet STREETLIFE.

My previous projects include technology for the Finnish Pavilion in Hannover 2000 Expo, which won the Best Pavilion in three consecutive public votings; showrooms for a local mobile operator Radiolinja (Elisa) and Nokia Networks in 2000-2002; 6 EU STREP projects in the last decade; two Academy of Finland projects (Ganzheit and 3DWIKI); some Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation projects such as Between; and various small industry projects.

I've been assistant on computer graphics and animation related courses in Helsinki University of Technology, and had two courses of my own on virtual environments. Currently I have no educational obligations and I tend to give occasional guest lectures on, for example, visualization of geographic information or arrange short summer school courses.

I was in the board of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services 2010-2013.

	Research Interests

Mobile 3D Maps: from rendering realistic, static 3D maps to live 3D maps, where content is updated on the fly using optimized networking schemes.

Mixed Reality in general: merging Mobile 3D Maps with Augmented Reality. Also in combination with multimodal interaction with wearables.

Eve Hoggan, Craig Stewart, Laura Haverinen and Giulio Jacucci (alongside Vuokko Lantz from Nokia Research Center) have published their work on the augmentation of traditional phone calls with haptic interaction in UIST 2012. ForcePhone is a mobile synchronous haptic communication system. During phone calls, users can squeeze the side of the device and the pressure level is mapped to vibrations on the recipient’s device. The pressure/vibrotactile messages supported by ForcePhone are called pressages. The results showed that an additional haptic channel of communication can be integrated into mobile phone calls using a pressure to vibrotactile mapping with local and remote feedback. The longitudinal study showed that such a system has value as a communication channel in real-world settings with users expressing greetings, presence and emotions through pressages.

	Abstract of ACM DL paper:

The ubiquity of music consumption is overarching. Statistics for digital music sales, streaming video videos, computer games, and illegal sharing all speak of a huge interest in the content. At the same, an incredible amount of data about every day interactions, sales and use, with music is accumulating through new digital services. However, there is an amazing lack of public knowledge about everyday music interaction. This panel discusses the state of music interaction as a part of digital media research. We consider why music interaction research has become so marginal in HCI and discuss how to revive it. Our two discussion themes are: orientation towards design vs. research in music related R&D, and the question if and how private, big data on music interactions could enlighten our understanding of ubiquitous media culture.

Study: Music Choices Change When They are Published

Giving out information on your music consumption publicly can change it.

A study finds that people are willing to put a lot of effort into maintaining a desirable public image of their music consumption. When information about music listening is published automatically, youth and young adults retain a notion of truth in presenting themselves: they rather change the music they listen to than "cheat" digitally.

Suvi Silfverberg, Lassi A. Liikkanen and Airi Lampinen from Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT studied the experience of maintaining a profile in the online music service Last.fm. Twelve Finnish youth and young adults where interviewed on their use of this music-focused social network service and its extension, called "the scrobbler", that publishes information of music listened to by service users.

The researchers found that people make active efforts to control the image their online profile gives of them, especially when their music listening is published automatically. While automated sharing of behavior information provides new opportunities for online music services, it also affects the people listening to music:

"When an online service publishes behavioral information automatically, it is important to give users a chance to express and explain the meanings of their actions. Listening to a song doesn't necessarily mean that one likes it - or wants to be known as the kind of person who does", says Liikkanen.

The study was published in the internationally renowned 2011 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work in March in Hangzhou, China. The presented research was conducted as part of the Academy of Finland funded research project Musiquitous (http://musiq.fi).
CHI2011 workshop ”Privacy for a Networked World”: Bridging Theory and Design

CHI2011 workshop ”Privacy for a Networked World”: Bridging Theory and Design

UIx will co-organize a workshop at upcoming CHI2011 conference: "Privacy for a Networked World”: Bridging Theory and Design on Saturday, May 7, 2011, in Vancouver, BC, Canada

As our lives are more commonly mediated by information technology, an interactional perspective to how people find and construct privacy in socio-technical interactions has proven effective as a starting point for theoretical and empirical studies of privacy in everyday life in which online interactions have a significant role.

Yet, there remain important open questions regarding how to translate results based on this perspective into design practice. Addressing these questions requires a greater sensitivity to when interactional privacy is applicable, a better understanding of suitable research methods, and more effective means for communicating results to the researcher and practitioner communities. The goal of this workshop is to bring privacy theory and design together.

We seek participants from various domains for a multidisciplinary workshop to share their knowledge and views of both the theory and design of interactional privacy.

We invite 2-4 page submissions in ACM Ext. Abstracts format by January 26, 2011. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

(1) Theoretical and empirical study of interactional privacy.

CHI2011 workshop on Appropriation and Creative Use

UIx will co-organize a workshop at upcoming CHI2011 conference: "Appropriation and Creative Use: Linking User Studies with Design":

Sunday 8 May 2011, Vancouver, Canada

End users of technology have a significant power in determining how technologies are used, adapted and re-purposed. Over the years, two communities – designers and user researchers – have been working on these topics but have had limited interaction with each other. This workshop provides a forum for the two to meet.

We invite 2-4 page submissions in ACM Ext. Abstracts format by 14 January 2011. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  * user research methods that are suitable for gaining understanding about
    different forms of appropriation
  * theories and conceptualizations of how appropriations take place, how
different factors play part in them, and how they can be affected by design choices
  * design principles that support appropriation
  * approaches that link theories and concepts with design
  * critical viewpoints on the prevailing appropriation-related design and
    research practice

					Luovat käytännöt tuotesuunnittelussa - LUTUS
Creative practices in product design

Brief in English
Design work depends on constant flow of creativity. The management of design and innovation and different systematic methods and ideation tools have gained a lot of research attention, but the everyday practices of design work have received much less attention. Recent studies have critiqued the descriptions of e.g. ideation methods, showing that they are typically either disregarded or used in a manner different from their theoretical depictions. The lack of understanding of real-life practices helps sustain suboptimal working approaches, attitudes, and routines. In the LUTUS project, we aim to understand the everyday creative work practices of designers through interviews, field studies and action research. The goal is to advance the understanding of real-life design work, help companies develop their design practices, and advance the education of designers. Research funding is provided by the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation.

This research is conducted at Aalto University, both Aalto Design Factory and Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.

In September 2012, we organized Aalto Studying and Improving Design Practice Symposium 2012

LUTUS-projektissa sovelletaan kognitiivisen suunnittelututkimuksen tutkimusmenetelmiä ammattilaissuunnittelijoiden luovien käytäntöjen tutkimukseen. Taustalla on uusi kolmijakoinen malli suunnittelutyön rakenteesta tutkimuksen, neuvottelun ja rakentamisen kautta. Tämän projektin puitteissa on tarkoitus keskittyä siihen, mitä suunnittelijat todella tekevät, millaisia käytäntöjä he noudattavat ja mitä psykologisia vaikutuksia niillä on.
