25 Nov 08: ICT 2008 - Future Internet Socio-Economics

Networking session "Future Internet Socio-Economics"
Time: 25 Nov 2008 14:00-15:30
Place: ICT 2008, Lyon, France

HIITTV Newsflash on the networking session

Presentations of the session »
Future events »

Many underlying issues plaguing the present Internet are economic in origin For instance, unwanted traffic (malware and spam) is inevitable if sending traffic is easy and cheap, while protection from unwanted traffic is expensive and complex.

A sustainable solution should change this balance to the favor of the recipient. This requires new insights into Internet architecture combined with socio-economic modeling, experimentation, and analysis.

HIIT organises Future Internet Socio-Economics networking session at ICT 2008. It provides a forum for researchers in industry and academia to discuss socio-economical research into the Future Internet.

The session will investigate several potential lines of such work:

How should the capital investment of building the future Internet be split?

How to influence the decisions and behaviors of the different stakeholders to make best use of Internet capacity and resources?

How to create an efficient market for distributed resources (network storage, caching)?

Economics of privacy and trust.

22-23 Oct 08: Nordic Cultural Commons Conference 2008

Nordic Cultural Commons Conference 2008
Stockholm, 22-23 October
www.hiit.fi/nccc

With the advent of the digital revolution and the Internet, it is suddenly possible to to work collaboratively across contexts and to create new, derivative or collective works on a global level. This presents an opportunity for an enormous and unprecedented stimulation of creativity and production of knowledge.

New licensing models have been created to help this collaborative creation. Open licenses such as Creative Commons provide ways for creators and distributors to work together. Such collaboration has proven itself fruitful also economically: open licensing has been succesfully used by music businesses, movie producers, book publishers and media companies.

How is business created around open licensing? What benefits does the Creative Commons model provide for public broadcasting and archiving? How open licensing changes the production of cultural works? How does the common Nordic legal environment affect re-use of cultural works?

Nordic Cultural Commons Conference provides insight into these questions. Bringing together all Nordic Creative Commons scholars and practitioners, it is also a great opportunity to meet and discuss the latest open content practices and ideas.

Our speakers include Mike Linksvayer (Creative Commons), John Buckman (Magnatune), Nicklas Lundblad (Google) and Paul Gerhardt (BBC Creative Archive).

Visit conference web site for more information: www.hiit.fi/nccc/

Events:

Events 2008

All interested parties are welcome! Please announce your intention to be present. to Dr. Giulio Jacucci. Title and abstract are as follows:

Grounded Innovation of Future Applications

Dr. Lars Erik Holmquist
Mobile Life Center
Stockholm University / SICS
Sweden

Location: HIIT Spektri Pilotti, see directions at http://www.hiit.fi
Time: 16th of May 10:00.

Abstract. Innovation is about more than just new ideas; to be successful, an innovation has to be adopted by users and play a meaningful role in their life. In my group the Future Applications Lab, we have tried to balance the search for new ideas, or the generation of inventions, with the need for grounding them in the real world through inquiry into human practices. With grounded innovation, we mean processes that balance the two axes of inquiry and innovation, to increase the chance for true innovations to be created. We have used this approach to develop a number of new applications and digital artifacts. For instance, the Context Camera is a novel digital camera that takes pictures where the visual appearance are affected by the surrounding sound and movement. GlowBots are small autonomous robotic pets that encourage long-term explorative interaction. In both these cases, the designs were driven by a combination of technical and conceptual invention. At the same time they were grounded in inquiry into unusual user groups, including amateur photographers who enjoy the unpredictable results of a slightly defect camera model, or owners of exotic pets such as snakes and spiders. We believe that grounded innovation can be a fruitful approach to create new applications that are novel and exciting while at the same time relevant and interesting for real users.

Dr. Lars Erik Holmquist is a senior researcher at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science in Kista, Sweden, a research leader in the Mobile Life Center at Stockholm University, and leader of the Future Applications Lab at the Viktoria Institute in Göteborg, Sweden. He previously founded and led the PLAY research group at the Interactive Institute. He received his master’s degree in Computer Science in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Informatics in 2000, both at the Göteborg University, and became an associate professor at the Göteborg IT University in 2004. His research interests include human-computer interaction, information visualization and ubiquitous computing. He has been member of many international conference committees and published extensively in these research fields. He was chair of the UbiComp 2002 conference and started the Mobile Music Technology workshop series in 2005. He is an associate editor of the Springer journal Personal and Ubiquitous Computing and writes a regular column in ACM's <interactions> magazine, "On the Edge".

Events:

Events 2008

24 Apr 08: FUGA reseachers measure gaming experience

The FUGA research project "The Fun of Gaming" creates methods and sophisticated techniques to improve gaming research and the overall gaming experience. The goal is to examine how the gaming experience - player's emotions and cognitions - can be accurately assessed.

The project also develops a prototype of an emotionally adaptive game. The game changes in real time based on the player's emotional state. For example, the game can get more difficult if the player becomes nervous.

The FUGA mini-symposium will be held at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT) in Espoo on 24 April, 2008 from 13:00 to 17:00. At the symposium, the FUGA researchers from different European countries will present their latest findings.

They will show new innovative techniques for researching the gaming experience. They will also provide new tools for designing games for different purposes. The game industry will also present at the symposium.

FUGA is a large international, interdisciplinary research project. The European Commission is funding the project as part of the 6th Framework Program.

CHIMe - Workshop on Psychological and experiential perspectives on mobile and ubiquitous computing 18.4.2008

Participants: and Ubiquitous Interaction (UIx) of HIIT, Finland, Communication between Humans and Interactive Media (CHIMe) Lab of Stanford University

Place: Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA

Schedule and program:

Speakers on behalf of CHIMe:

TBA,
" I will have about 12-15 students coming, all of whom are doing working in mobile. "

Program

12:00 Introductions, 15-20 min (moderator leading discussion)
-Chime, 3 min (what kind of research is conducted, what are the key phenomena studied, what kind of questions are typically asked in research, what are the key methods etc.)

-HIIT, 3 min

-people 1 minute each

2. Presentations, 80 min (moderator leading discussion)

-4 presentations from HIIT, a 7 min with questions 3 min = 40 min (see our topic areas on the web page)

-4 presentations from Chime, a 7 min with questions 3 min = 40 min (you can pick your topic areas that you think would fit the workshop, perhaps around psychological issues of mobile and ubiquitous computing?)

-presentations are free format, one can talk or show slides, in a very compressed, straight to the point- style to communicate essential points and facilitate discussion, no extensive backgrounders but interesting questions one is asking and answering in one´s research, of course, questions could be at any level from micro to macro, not to outrule theoretical discussions if any should arise

-audience questions also to the point, essential aspects only, keep it short but high impact

3. Concluding, 15 min (Timo Saari, Clifford Nass leading discussion)
-discussing commonalities and differences, representatives of both institutes and people in the room

-synthesizing

-discussing possible collaboration interests

This leads to a schedule of about 115 min, i.e. about two hours

Speakers on behalf of UIx:

Antti Oulasvirta: Fragmentation of attention in mobile interaction
All interested parties are welcome! Title and abstract follow.

Multimedia Workloads, Architectures to Process Them, Their Performance and the Use of Caches for Multimedia Workloads

CS Division
Berkeley, California
http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~smith

Monday, Jan 7th 2008, 1:30 pm - 4 pm
HIIT, Spektri Pilotti, 3rd floor, Metsänneidonkuja 4, Espoo

The last decade has seen the integration of audio, video, and 3D graphics into existing workloads as well as the emergence of new workloads dominated by the processing of these forms of media. Unfortunately, widely accepted benchmarks which capture these new workloads in a realistic way have not emerged. We present the Berkeley multimedia workload, which was developed to facilitate our own studies on architectural support for multimedia.

The caching behavior of multimedia applications has been described as having high instruction reference locality within small loops, very large working sets, and poor data cache performance due to non-locality of data references. Despite this, there is no published research deriving or measuring these qualities. Utilizing the previously developed Berkeley Multimedia Workload, we present the results of execution driven cache simulations with the goal of aiding future media processing architecture design. Our analysis examines the differences between multimedia and traditional applications in cache behavior. We find that multimedia applications actually exhibit lower instruction miss ratios and comparable data miss ratios when contrasted with other widely studied workloads. In addition, we find that longer data cache line sizes than are currently used would benefit multimedia processing.

Many microprocessor instruction sets include instructions for accelerating multimedia applications such as DVD playback, speech recognition and 3D graphics. Despite general agreement on the need to support this emerging
workload, there are considerable differences between the instruction sets that have been designed to do so. We present a study of the performance of five instruction sets on kernels extracted from a broad multimedia workload. Each kernel was recoded in the assembly language of the five multimedia extensions. We compare the performance of each extension against other architectures as well as to the original compiled C performance. From our analysis we determine how well multimedia workloads map to current architectures, what was useful and what was not. We also propose two enhancements to current architectures: strided memory operations, and superwide registers.

The work to be presented was done with Nathan Slingerland, formerly a graduate student at UC Berkeley.

Events:

Events 2008
