Study exposes the negative effects of increasing computerized surveillance

Researchers at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT finish the first longitudinal study on the effects of ubiquitous surveillance in the home. To understand the effects of continuous computerized surveillance on individuals, researchers at HIIT instrumented ten Finnish households with video cameras, microphones, and logging software for personal computers, wireless networks, smartphones, TVs, and DVDs. The twelve participants filled monthly questionnaires to report on stress levels and were interviewed at six and twelve months.

The results expose a range of negative changes in experience and behavior. To all except one participant, the surveillance system proved to be a cause of annoyance, concern, anxiety, and even anger. However, surveillance did not cause mental health issues comparable in severity to depression or alcoholism, when measured with a standardized scale. Nevertheless, one household dropped out of the study at six months, citing that the breach of privacy and anonymity had grown unbearable.

The surveillees' privacy concerns plateaued after about three months, as the surveillees got more used to surveillance. The researchers attribute this to behavioral regulation of privacy. Almost all subjects exhibited changes in behavior to control what the system perceives. Some hid their activities in the home from the sensors, while some transferred them to places outside the home. Dr. Antti Oulasvirta explains:

- Although almost all were capable of adapting their daily practices to maintain privacy intrusion at a level they could tolerate, the required changes made the home fragile. Any unpredicted social event would bring the new practices to the fore and question them, and at times prevent them from taking place.

The researchers were surprised that computer logging was as disturbing as camera-based surveillance. On the one hand, logging the computer was experienced negatively because it breaches the anonymity of conversations. Oulasvirta explains:

- The importance of anonymity in computer use is symptomatic of the fact that a large proportion of our social activities today are mediated by computers.

On the other hand, the ever-observing "eye", the video camera, deprived the participants of the solitude and isolation they expect at home. The surveillees felt particularly strong the violation of reserve and intimacy by the capture of nudity, physical appearance, and sex. Oulasvirta concludes:

- Psychological theories of privacy have postulated six privacy functions of the home, and we find that computerized surveillance can disturb all of them.

More experimental research is needed to reveal the effects of computerized surveillance. Prof. Petri Myllymäki explains: "Because the topic is challenging to study empirically, there is hardly any published research on the effects of intrusive surveillance on everyday life. In the Helsinki Privacy Experiment project, we did rigorous ethical and legal preparations, and invested into a robust technical platform, in order to allow a longitudinal field experiment of privacy. The present sample of subjects is potentially biased, as it was selected from people who volunteered based on an Internet advertisement. While we realize the limits of our sample, our work can facilitate further inquiries into this important subject."

The first results were presented at the 14th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp 2012) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

Computational Inference

Mission

The four groups of the CI programme are all members of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research (COIN), and the objectives of the programme are closely intertwined with those of COIN.

The main objective of CI is to develop methods for transforming the data produced by the current data revolution into useful information. The key methodology for achieving this goal is statistical and computational inference based on the data. The emphasis is on large data collections and computationally demanding modelling and inference algorithms. Our mission is to push the boundary towards both more complex problems, requiring more structured data models, and towards extremely rapid inference. We plan to address a set of carefully chosen interdisciplinary “grand challenge” -level problems with high societal impact where solving the data intensive problems requires novel methodologies that can only result from combining the expertise of separate subfields.

Research challenges

Our mission brings up four partially overlapping methodological focus areas:

Learning of massive data-driven models

This area, where our groups have a particularly strong track record, is about how to learn efficiently effective models from data. In the future we wish to further scale up our methods to “big data” problems involving massive data sets that may even require new, incremental or sub-polynomial methodological approaches.

Learning from multiple sources

In the future the relevant information is typically distributed among a large set of partially connected sets. The parcelled and heterogeneous nature of the data is a problem, but is also an opportunity as while the data sets itself may contain mostly irrelevant data, the relationships between the data sources may give useful information, provided that suitable multi-source machine learning methods can be developed.

Statistical inference in highly structured stochastic models

This focus area is concerned with the issue of how to do the modelling when the models are very complex in the sense of being structured by prior information and constraints. Despite the wealth of documented success stories about inference in highly structured stochastic models, awareness about the failure of standard stochastic computation techniques to handle increasing complexity of models is accumulating in the inference research community. In order to scale up existing stochastic learning methods, we will develop new types of intelligent adaptive algorithms.

Extreme inference engine

This area is about real-time optimization and contraint reasoning problems: in particular in tasks related to contextual information retrieval, it is crucially important to get access to the information instantly and all the time, requiring on-line learning of the models and extremely rapid inference of what is relevant in the current context.

In applied research our work is also motivated by the big data and ubiquitous computing vision, where adaptivity, context-awareness and personalisation are key enablers. We see that our four methodological research areas support strongly each other, and they all address from a different perspective the key technological problems we face in our future "big data" information society. In our applied research we wish to link our strong basic research work in machine learning and constraint reasoning to well-motivated applied research activities involving prototype applications and real-world deployments.

The Department of Information and Computer Science (http://ics.aalto.fi/) at Aalto University in Espoo/Helsinki, Finland, pursues research on advanced computational methods for modelling, analysing, and solving complex tasks in technology and science. JOHTAVAN TUTKIJAN
tehtävä 1.1.2009 lukien kolmen vuoden määräajaksi. Tehtävä voi sijoittua joko Teknilliseen korkeakouluun tai Helsingin yliopistoon, ja se voidaan täyttää myös osa-aikaisesti.

Johtavan tutkijan tehtävänä on HIITin Future Internet -tutkimusohjelman johtaminen, ohjelman hankkeiden valmistelu ja koordinointi, sen yhteistyöverkostojen kehittäminen, ohjelman tutkijoiden opinnäytteiden ohjaus sekä tutkimuslaitoksen tutkimusstrategian suunnitteluun ja toteutukseen osallistuminen. Tutkimusohjelmalla on toimintaa HIITin molemmissa yksiköissä.

Tehtävän menestyksellinen hoitaminen edellyttää soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa, professoritasoista tieteellistä pätevyyttä, opetustaitoa, johtamiskokemusta ja kokemusta kansainvälisestä tutkimusyhteistyöstä.

Johtavan tutkijan tehtävä on sijoitettu yliopistojen opetus- ja tutkimushenkilöstön järjestelmässä vaativuustasolle 8 - 10 (4082,55 - 5200,25 euroa) nimitettävän hakijan pätevyydestä riippuen. Lisäksi maksetaan henkilökohtaista palkanosaa.
