Indian Minister of Science visited HIIT

Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Science and Technology of India, visited the HIIT in Kumpula on Wednesday, 26 March. Minister Sibal learned more about bioinformatics research, ContextPhone platform and intelligent information retrieval methods developed at the HIIT.

Research Director Esko Ukkonen presented bioinformatics research targeting cancer mutations. The research project is a part of the ADA research programme.

ContextPhone, a mobile context-aware prototyping platform developed in the ADA research programme, was demonstrated by Professor Hannu Toivonen. ContextPhone helps to develop context-specific services that are relevant to the mobile user.

Professor Petri Myllymäki presented research on intelligent text analysis methods that help in developing next generation search engines. This work is a part of the PAS research programme.

The goal of Minister Sibal's trip was to deepen Finnish-Indian cooperation. During the minister's official visit to Finland. Finland and India signed an agreement on science and technology co-operation between the nations. The aim of the agreement is to reinforce the mobility of companies, communities and researchers. The agreement confirms the contracting parties' attempt to develop and promote cooperation in the fields of science and technology.
