Description:

Sumanta Saha, M.Sc.(Tech.), will defend the dissertation “Efficient Methods on Reducing Data Redundancy in the Internet” on 30 October 2015 at 12 noon in Aalto University, School of Science, lecture hall T2, Konemiehentie 2, Espoo. The dissertation "Efficient Methods on Reducing Data Redundancy in the Internet" explores that reducing data duplicacy makes the Internet more efficient and economical. Efficient cache organization or data redundancy elimination allows us to achieve this goal.

The Internet is all about content and popularity. Popular contents tend to be delivered many times creating redundant traffic over the network. Reducing this duplicate traffic from the network makes the network more economical and saves energy. Reducing redundancy in the network can be done in multiple ways: we can inspect the traffic flows and strip off duplicate data which we know exist downstream, we can organize the caches in the network such that they are more efficient and caches more objects, or we can employ efficient content delivery methods to reduce the redundancy at the source.

This dissertation has looked into the problem from all these perspectives and reported the findings and improvements over contemporary Internet technologies. Employing the proposals made in the dissertation will make the Internet more efficient and economical.
