  • Patient experiences at the Children's Hospital have a wide ranging impact on the family’s daily life outside the hospital too. Aalto University researchers and the HUCH Children’s Hospital carried out collaborative research into the views of child patients and their families on hospital visits, the care received and life with long-term illness. The research project included developing a patient experience survey for the parents of patients at the Children’s Hospital, and investigating the...
  • Professor Lokki is promoted for bringing sensory evaluation to research of concert hall acoustics. The Audio Engineering Society (AES) has elevated Professor Tapio Lokki to the status of AES fellow, which is reserved for highly merited members. Lokki is a professor at the Department of Computer Science at the Aalto University. The AES is an international society of audio professionals, which has about 12000 members worldwide. The society names annually a few of its members with extraordinary...
  • To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Norssi, the Semantic Computing Research Group has digitised Norssi’s old registers. Eero Hyvönen, the Director of the new Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Helsinki (HELDIG) and Professor of semantic media technology at Aalto University, was honoured as Norssi of the Year on Friday last week. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Helsingin Normaalilyseo school (nicknamed Norssi), the alumni society Vanhat Norssit of the school...
  • Half of Aalto's new Academy Research Fellows work in applied physics. The Academy of Finland’s funding decisions, published on 11 May, added eight new Academy Research Fellows and 13 postdoctoral researchers to Aalto University. The funding focuses on the fields of natural science and engineering. Of the funding that was received by Aalto, EUR 3,476,000 was allocated to Academy Research Fellows and EUR 3,333,000 to postdoctoral researchers. Academy Research Fellow posts are for a term of...
  • HIIT group leader, professor Jukka Corander has received the ERC Advanced grant funding for 2017-2022. His SCARABEE project is located at University of Oslo, but it involves a considerable collaboration with HIIT scientists at both Aalto University and University of Helsinki. SCARABEE will develop new computational inference methods for evolutionary epidemiology, including genome-wide epistasis, GWAS, population genomics and transmission dynamics. Applications to large-scale bacterial genomics...
  • A group of researchers believes that contrary to a common model sunspots form near the Sun's surface. The SPOTSIM project, which studies the formation of sunspots, has been awarded competed time on the Mare Nostrum supercomputer in Spain. The awarded resources amount to 20 million CPU hours -  a computing time equal to approximately 500 years on a normal laptop. The group of researchers including scientists from Aalto University and the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS)...
  • The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge is a world-leading genomics research facility, where HIIT group leader professor Jukka Corander has had a long-term research collaboration with scientists in the Pathogen Genomics program since 2010. On May 4th, 2017, the director of the Sanger Institute announced that Jukka Corander has been appointed to an Honorary Faculty member position at Sanger. This strengthens further the possibilities for doing joint cutting-edge research on pathogen...

  • The Building Expertise for Innovation conference brought together researchers, decision-makers and industry. The Building Expertise for Innovation conference, hosted by Aalto University from 25 to 27 April, focused on how digitalization as a disruptive technological force transforms industries, services and society. National innovation policies, creation of platform ecosystems and the role of experts and expert judgements were among key topics. Building regional innovation ecosystems anchored...
  • HIIT researchers collaborating with University of Birmingham and University of Oslo present results paving the way for computers to learn psychologically plausible models of individuals simply by observing them. In newly published CHI'17 article, the researchers showed that just by observing how long a user takes to click menu items, one can infer a model that reproduces similar behavior and accurately estimates some characteristics of that user's visual system, such as fixation...
