Semantic Product Memories in the Innovative Retail Laboratory
Abstract:
ICT-supported logistics and services related to high value products, starting from the initial consult and covering everything from maintenance and repair to recycling, have become a key success factor in many sectors. To remain competitive in the global markets, manufacturing and trading companies find they are more and more dependent on the ability to capture and track a product together with all its relevant life cycle data. As part of the "Digital Product Memory" Innovation Alliance of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the research and industry technology cooperation "SemProM – Semantic Product Memory" has as its objective the development of the next generation of mobile, embedded, and wireless elements. In the sense of an "Internet of Things", it will be possible to capture all operational and logistical product data and to exchange it with the users, other products, and the immediate environment. Beside the advantages for industry, SemProM will bring a benefit to end users. In my talk, I will illustrate some demonstrators that we have developed in the Innovative Retail Laboratory (IRL) to assist users while shopping (irl.dfki.de). The IRL is one of five living labs of the German Institute for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and it is set up as an instrumented shopping environment, where we conduct testings in a large number of different fields all connected to intelligent shopping consultants, which range from a virtual assistant responsible for matters of dieting and allergies, over a digital sommelier, to personalized cross and up selling, smart items with digital product memories as a further development of the RFID technology, indoor positioning and navigation as well as new logistics concepts, to see if they are suitable for everyday life and useful for customers.
