17 June 2010 - The President of Aalto University and the Rector of Helsinki University have appointed Professor Samuel Kaski as the new Director of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT for a fixed five-year term.
Samuel Kaski has been Professor of Computer Science since 2004, first at the University of Helsinki, then at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology (previously TKK). Before these appointments, he held various researcher positions at the Academy of Finland.
Kaski specializes in statistical machine learning and exploratory data analysis, which he studies in interdisciplinary projects; current areas of application include bioinformatics, neuroinformatics and proactive interfaces.
The research group of Kaski is part of the national Centre of Excellence in Adaptive Informatics Research, in which Kaski is the Deputy Director. Kaski is also Deputy Head of the Department of Information and Computer Science at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology, and Director of the Finnish Graduate School in Computational Sciences.
Kaski will start as the Director of the research institute jointly administered by Aalto University and the University of Helsinki on 1 August 2010. The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology is composed of two parts, one belonging to Aalto University and the other to the University of Helsinki.
