The National Technology Agency TEKES awarded first-year funding for the project Services for All (E!2023 ITEA S4ALL). The project aims at a vision of a world where digital services are made available to all citizens everywhere, at any time, in any condition and by anyone. For this, it will develop new technologies for service creation, customisation, deployment and provisioning. The project belongs to the ITEA cluster of the Eureka programme; the international consortium is led by Alcatel CIT. Apart from HIIT, other Finnish members of the consortium include Nokia and Capricode.

The National Technology Agency TEKES awarded first-year funding for the project Fuego Core 2005/2007: Future Mobile Middleware. The objective of the project is to develop middleware components for reconfigurable systems that enable adaptive, context-aware and personalized applications. The project is led by Professor Kimmo Raatikainen of the University of Helsinki and HIIT.

HIIT joined the PlanetLab Consortium, a collection of academic, industrial, and government institutions cooperating to support and enhance the PlanetLab overlay network designed to allow researchers to develop and test powerful new types of software that are not confined to a single computer but run on many computers at once, treating the global network as one large, widely distributed computer. The PlanetLab Consortium is managed by Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Washington.

The Academy of Finland awarded funding for the project Cognitively inspired visual interfaces for representing multidimensional information (CIVI). The project is led by Professor Petri Myllymäki. It will be executed in co-operation with Docent Ilpo Kojo from the Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) at the Helsinki School of Economics, who received a matching grant.

The Academy of Finland awarded funding for the project Urban Space and Experience Design (USED) - participatory methods for new media art & research. The project is an art-research interaction project which converges methods and approaches of new media art, interface design and urban studies. The aim is to develop a practice informed by an understanding of the experiential and social qualities of public spaces as they are being reconfigured by wireless and pervasive technologies.
