  • 15.8.2003: Search-ina-box project funded by TEKES

    TEKES awarded the first-year funding for the project Search-ina-Box (SIB). The project is intended to form a central part of the next-generation Internet search research area at HIIT, already commenced with the support of the Academy of Finland in the PROSE project. SIB will study especially topic-specific search engines for intranets.

    TEKES awarded the first-year funding for the project Intelligent Web Services (IWebS). The project investigates how Semantic Web techniques can be used to add content and intelligent features to Web Services based on open standards such as UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP. The project is led by Professor Eero Hyvönen, University of Helsinki and HIIT.

    The Mobile Content Communities project was launched. The project investigates communities that create and distribute digital content amongst themselves, with special emphasis on mobile game communities.

  • 26.-28.5.2003: HIIT Retreat 2003 held

    HIIT arranged the HIIT Retreat in the Sjökulla Education Centre. The objective of the meeting was to offer an opportunity for representatives from industry to interact with HIIT senior researchers and to get a comprehensive view of HIIT's research and future plans.

    HIIT submitted four consortium-type project proposals to the newly started Fenix program of TEKES:

  • 11.3.2003: MobileIPR workshop CFP published

    The call for papers of the First International Mobile IPR Workshop: Rights Management of Information Products on the Mobile Internet was published. HIIT will organize the workshop on August 27 - 28, 2003. Professor Hal Varian (UC Berkeley, USA) will give a keynote speech.

  • 7.2.2003: PDIS project receives TEKES funding

    TEKES awarded first-year funding for the project Personal Distributed Information Store that studies a synchronization-based peer-to-peer infrastructure for storage of lightweight structured data such as calendar entries and other PIM data. Dr. Ken Rimey leads the project; the partners are Nokia, Hewlett-Packard, Innofactor and Creanor Movial.

  • 9.12.2002: Anu Kankainen's doctoral dissertation

    Anu Kankainen, HIIT researcher in the Between project, defended successfully her doctoral thesis Thinking Model and Tools for Understanding User Experience Related to Information Appliance Product Concepts in a public defence at the Helsinki University of Technology. Her doctorate is the first earned from work largely conducted at HIIT.

  • 11.11.2002: PROSE project receives funding from Academy of Finland

    The Academy of Finland awarded 4-year funding for the project Scalable Probabilistic Methods for Next Generation Internet Search Engines (PROSE) by professor Henry Tirri of the University of Helsinki and HIIT.

    The project forms the core technical and methodological activity of a larger research effort aimed at creating a next-generation distributed Internet search engine that provides greatly enhanced service in comparison with the present state-of-the-art.     The project Personal Distributed Information Store studies a synchronization-based peer-to-peer infrastructure for storage of lightweight structured data.

    The project Zenith: Horizontal Service Management aims to develop a service platform for next-generation heterogeneous, distributed, multi-channel digital services on the basis of semantic service models and directories.
