The Finnish weekly news magazine Suomen Kuvalehti has published an article about the filter bubble and future Finnish information browsing technologies. SciNet is mentioned as an example of a search engine that can be used to break out of the bubble.

New Tekes research projects will find solutions for new energy systems, personalised healthcare and novel industrial processes using biological systems. HIIT participates in two of the three new programmes (Digital Health Revolution and Living Factories).

With modern high-throughput technologies researchers can measure a multitude of molecular properties from cancer cells. A big question of precision medicine is how computational modelling can be used to predict sensitivity of cancer cells to drugs, and the best cancer treatment. Answers are sought in a study published in Nature Biotechnology.

Artificial Intelligence and Statistics is one of the top ranking conferences on machine learning. The conference was chaired by Profs. Samuel Kaski and Jukka Corander. Dr. Jaakko Peltonen was the publicity chair and Dr. Antti Honkela was the publication chair. The collocated Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS 2014) brought together top researchers from all over the world to give short courses of various machine learning topics.

Dr Matti Järvisalo got Academy of Finland's 5-year Academy Research Fellow funding for his research on "Decision Procedures for the Polynomial Hierarchy, Boolean Optimization, and Model Counting (PHantoM)". More information on Matti's research is found in this page.

The published paper "Bridging the Gap between Internet Standardization and Networking Research" highlights the value of collaboration between academia and industry by describing the differences and similarities between how the two communities operate.

The Finnish science magazine Tiede publishes a feature article about SciNet - the prototype of a novel search engine that enables the user to direct her search interactively. SciNet is developed in collaboration with the research groups involved in the HIIT-Wide Focus Area on Augmented Science.

HIIT researchers Airi Lampinen and Tapio Ikkala are contributing to timely debates on the sharing economy with their new research, published this week at the internationally renowned ACM CSCW 2014 conference. The conference is held this year in Baltimore in the United States. CSCW is the largest annual research conference focusing on computer-supported cooperative work.
