Internet of Things research featured in YLE Prisma Studio television program

NODES Internet of Things research was mentioned in the YLE Prisma Studio TV program broadcast on April 29. The program showcases a wearable device for climbing and a sensor enhanced greenhouse. Professor Sasu Tarkoma, Dr. Samu Varjonen and Dr. Julien Mineraud were interviewed for the program. The program is in Finnish with the exception of the part on the wearable device.

Aalto data science hackathon

The Aalto data science hackathon took place in the Open Innovation House in Otaniemi, in the weekend of April 24-26. A wealth of interesting datasets was provided by IT companies and organizations, such as, Elisa, Microsoft, Wellmo, CIVIS, HSL, in addition to social-media data and open data that were also used. The hackathon was centered around three themes: telecommunications, fitness, and smart cities. More than 40 students participated and hacked intensively over the weekend.

Advances in Independent Component Analysis and Learning Machines (Elsevier), edited by Ella Bingham, Samuel Kaski, Jorma Laaksonen and Jouko Lampinen, is collected in honour of Professor Erkki Oja, one of the pioneers of Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The book reviews recent advances in the theory and application of ICA, as well as its influence on signal processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, and data mining.

HIIT group leader Marko Turpeinen to lead EIT ICT Labs Silicon Valley Hub

Helsinki Node Director Marko Turpeinen has been selected as the Director for the EIT ICT Labs Silicon Valley Hub. He will start in this position on May 1st, 2015. Marko is already very familiar with USA and Silicon Valley as he graduated from MIT in 2000 and was a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley during 2009-2010.

Researchers from the Digital Content Communities and the Communication Research Center CRC are now happy after the end of elections and their massive data collection on social and traditional media activity related to election communication. Circa 750 000 Tweets have now been collected and ready for analysis. Researchers started to do some descriptive analysis to answer one of the most important question media has: were these now the first, official social media elections.
