Heikki Mannila appointed new HIIT director

17 Dec 2008 - TKK and the University of Helsinki have appointed Academy professor Heikki Mannila as the new director of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT.
Professor Mannila is a pioneer in data mining research and one of the world's leading developers of data mining methods. In addition to working with basic computer science research, he is active in several application areas, including bioinformatics, genetics, telecommunications, palaeontology and linguistics. He is currently serving as Academy Professor at HIIT.

Jussi Kangasharju appointed new director of Future Internet research programme

17 Dec 2008 - The board of HIIT has nominated Professor Jussi Kangasharju as the new director of HIIT's Future Internet reserach programme. Professor Kangasharju has already worked as the programme's pro tem director this autumn.
Since June 2007 Kangasharju has been a professor at the department of computer science at University of Helsinki. His research interests are peer-to-peer technologies, content distribution, pervasive computing, and future Internet development. He is a member of IEEE and ACM.

Ossi social media service upgraded on OtaSizzle

11 Dec 2008 - Upgraded version of social media service Ossi has been launched on OtaSizzle. User can open new discussion fora and add avatar images to their profils on Ossi 1.0. OtaSizzle is a test environment for testing mobile social media services.

Most amateurs don't demand copyright fees for their content

9 Dec 2008 - Most amateurs are not looking for copyright fees when they make and publish photos, videos and music. For them the most important reason to make and share the production is collaborate with other people. Amateurs are making a growing share of all technically superior photos, videos and music. This was an outcome of Herkko Hietanen's doctoral dissertation.

25 Nov 2008 - HIIT organised networking session "Future Internet Socio-Economics" at ICT 2008 in Lyon, France on 25 November. It provided a forum for researchers in industry and academia to discuss socio-economical research into the Future Internet.

IT group makes a hardware inventory

25 Nov 08 - IT group will do a hardware inventory during the first week (from 1 to 5) of December. Every computer must be shown to IT group. Laptops should be brought to room 3029 in Spektri or to room A215 in Kumpula. IT group will come to check the bigger equipment like desktop computers and displays.
The group will collect/check the following information: serial number, MAC address, type/make of computer, current user.This will only take a few minutes per computer.

Best MSc thesis of the year award to Ville Tuulos

20 Nov 2008 - The Finnish Association for Mathematicians, Physicists and Computer Scientists granted the award for the best MSc thesis of the year to Ville Tuulos for his thesis "Design and Implementation of a Content-Based Search Engine". In his thesis Mr Tuulos designed, implemented and tested a novel, content-based semantic search engine.
