Kemppinen: Lex Nokia violates the constitutional rights

1 Feb 2009 - Professor Jukka Kemppinen says the proposed "Lex Nokia" violates the fundamental rights as they are defined in the Finnish constitution.
Jukka Kemppinen is a professor of Lappeenranta University of Technology and a principal scientist of HIIT.

HIIT study on mobile augmented mobile maps received CHI's Best Paper Award nomination

31 Jan 2009 - A paper from a team of HIIT researchers on mobile augmented mobile maps has received a nomination for the Best Paper Award in CHI 2009. CHI is the most highly ranked scientific conference on Computer-Human Interaction in the world. 3% of all submissions to the conference were considered Award Nominees by the SIGCHI "Best of CHI" program.

Camera phone can help a child to tell about the nursery day

28 Jan 2009 - Children can tell more about their day in kindergarten with camera phones. In a study made in HIIT 3- to 6-year-old nursery school children were given mobile phones with cameras. The pictures were automatically transferred to a web service for the parents and teachers to see. In the evenings the parents looked at shots with their children. When viewing the images together, the children were able to tell better about the events of the day. Viewing the images did not decrease the time the parents spent with their children.

Jaiku code released under open source licence

14 Jan 2009 - Google will release the Jaiku code under the open source Apache license. Google is closing its own Jaiku development and allowing other organizations to pick up where the Google team left off. It is not clear if current users will be able to transfer their accounts.
The basic technology of Jaiku, an activity stream and presence sharing service, was developed in HIIT and the University of Helsinki Department of Computer Science in 2002-05. It was sold to Google in 2007.
