Affordable electric power meters underestimate consumption
Mon, 13.07.2009
14 July 2009 - End-user electricity consumption meters often underestimate the power consumed by the electronic equipment. Researchers at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and Helsinki University of Technology TKK found out that some commonly available power meters measure 25 percent lower consumption than in reality.

People avoid too automatic location information in mobile services
Tue, 07.07.2009
7 July 2009 - People shun fully automatic location information web and mobile services if the users cannot control them easily. If the service providers want to attract users to use the services, users should be given a chance to edit the information or the automation should meet the exact needs of the desired target group.

Study: Baby-boomers need social network sites based on their own needs
Wed, 24.06.2009
25 June 2009 - Social network sites should be designed to meet the needs of 55-65 year-old people. HIIT researchers found out that many baby-boomers think social network sites like Facebook are unfit to their needs. This is the reason why so few of them use any social network services on the net.

Doctoral dissertation: Optimisation problems in wireless sensor networks
Sat, 13.06.2009
13 June 2009 - Jukka Suomela defended his Doctoral Disseration on "Optimisation Problems in Wireless Sensor Networks: Local Algorithms and Local Graphs" on 13 June. Some computational problems related to communication networks can be solved by using a "local algorithm": each computer operates using only information in its immediate surroundings. The thesis presents the best possible local algorithms for some resource-allocation problems.

Doctoral disseration: algorithm for constructing the most probable Bayesian network from data for small domains
Sat, 30.05.2009
30 May 2009 - Tomi Silander introduced in his doctoral dissertation an algorithm for constructing the most probable Bayesian network from data for small domains. The algorithm is used to show that a popular goodness criterion for the Bayesian networks has a severe sensitivity problem. The dissertation then proposes an information theoretic criterion that avoids the problem.

Study: More is not better in search engine use
Sat, 09.05.2009
11 May 2009 - Researchers at HIIT showed that users get overwhelmed with an increasing number of results. They are more satisfied with their choice when they are only given a few items.
