1 Dec 2009 - In his doctoral dissertation, Tancred Lindholm publishes new algorithms for data synchronization on mobile devices and evaluates them. By using the algorithms, users can better combine changes made to different copies of the same data.

Doctoral dissertation: mathematical techniques for computing NML efficiently

30 Nov 2009 - In the doctoral dissertation, Petri Kontkanen presents mathematical techniques for computing Normalized Maximum Likelihood (NML) distribution efficiently for some model families involving discrete data. Kontkanen also shows how these techniques can be used to apply MDL in two practical applications: histogram density estimation and clustering of multi-dimensional data.

Patrik Floréen new HIIT Director

23 Nov 2009 - PhD, docent Patrik Floréen has been appointed the new Director of HIIT. Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Helsinki have appointed Floréen as the HIIT Director for the term 15 November 2009 to 31 July 2010.

Doctoral dissertation: Three methods for the haplotype inference problem

20 Nov 2009 - In Pasi Rastas' Doctoral disseration, three methods are presented for the haplotype inference problem. The problems studied belong to the broad area of bioinformatics and computational biology. The presented solutions are computationally fast and accurate, which makes them practical in high-throughput sequence data analysis.

European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics awarded Teemu Roos

26 Oct 2009 - ERCIM, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics, has chosen Teemu Roos from the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT as the winner of the 2009 Cor Baayen Award for a promising young researcher in computer science and applied mathematics.

New techniques for detecting personally meaningful places

In his thesis Petteri Nurmi has focused on providing system level support for place identification, as well as on algorithmic issues related to the place identification process.

This digitalisation of consumption is an inherent consequence of the increasing involvement of communication technology in everyday social activities, says HIIT Researcher Vili Lehdonvirta.
